You can take compiled files out; you cannot take the project, the loops, the logic, or a Git repo. Stop paying and editing stops. 01 · The pitch
Same Svelte canvas as EtchWP. Different trap: a proprietary locked-in app where the project is not editable outside their tenant. You build inside their canvas, publish a folder of static files, and pay again every month to change anything. A ZIP is not ownership. A lease is not liberation.
02 · What it is
Etch Studio is a proprietary locked-in app (alpha as of August 2026) on a recurring bill. It runs the same Svelte visual editor as EtchWP, but your loops, logic, components, and styles live in their relational database — not in files you can open in an IDE, not in Git, not on your host. Editing happens only inside their hosted environment. When you publish, Studio deploys compiled static files to Cloudflare. That output is not the project.
On August 25, 2026, Kevin Geary said Studio "does not look any different from Etch." Correct. The UI stayed. The ownership model did not.

Geary described Studio as the place where new architecture ships first:
“This is kind of the development grounds for where we do things the way they should have been done and then we find a way to port that over to WordPress.”
Features named on that stream as Studio-first include the data manager, data sources, schema view, and visual JSON builder. As of September 2026, those have not appeared in the EtchWP changelog.
03 · Their words
Digital Gravy sold EtchWP with lifetime deals and a public marketing case against builder lock-in. Their live /why/ page still contrasts old builders with what Etch offers:
“Builder lock-in—everything you build is trapped in a proprietary builder environment.”
Their answer, on the same page:
“Unprecedented data liberation—everything you build is authored to custom Gutenberg blocks and stored in core WordPress.”
“See your code, modify your code, export your code—complete ownership and control.”
“Everything is portable, shareable, and eventually git-able.”
Their /features/ page repeats the liberation frame:
“This fully liberates your data from Etch while providing a native WordPress editing experience for clients.”
Those promises were real for WordPress: blocks in post_content, two-way sync, client editing in native WordPress. Etch Studio moves the canvas off WordPress and asks for a second checkout. Read their own quotes below — then read what Studio ships.
04 · What you get
On the August 25, 2026 stream, Geary demonstrated a ZIP download from Settings:
“There's your zip file.”
That is a folder of compiled output — not a repository, not an editable project. No Git. No branches. No re-import. No editing outside their proprietary app. Cancel and you keep dead files. You lose the only environment that can change them.

Skip Studio if you wanted ownership, if your client expects a repo, or if you already funded the canvas once and refuse to rent it again.

Studio is the opposite: pay monthly while you stay to keep editing; if you leave, you get a ZIP of compiled HTML and assets — not the project, not the editor, not Git.
